Back when speed was king and guns were an afterthought. Some cool jets though.

The only aircraft without a gun is the F-102
The other three were designed with internal guns

My favorite era of aviation. They skipped the (X)F-103.

Things got more interesting higher up anyway:
(we did sort of get the F-108, but it got much slower and was a carrier based bomber):

Was really some commonality between the Vigilante and the Rapier design/development?
Always loved the Vigilante. So elegant.

The starfighter is such an amazing little jet.

From a technical point of view, the optimism was boundless.
On the other hand, it is easier to dream up and even execute daring designs when there is so much money at your disposal because of the Cold War.
Much the same can be said of the space race, of course.

Yeah, North American used the same fuselage on both aircraft (to the extent that there ever was an XF-108).
The A-5 was mainly huge though (the XF-108 would have been a huge fighter as well):

Thanks for the reply, that’s fascinating.
Yes, I knew it was rather ginormous. (Even more so if seen next to an A-4, of course!)

F100, F101, F102, F104?
We sure had a lot of F in planes back then, didn’t we?
